Popular accessories for Emergency Safety Showers and Eye Wash Units

Safety shower fittings

The Gaslines team often gets asked about ancillary items to go with the emergency safety shower and eyewash units we provide to customers. As such, we thought it might be helpful for us to put together a short article going through some of the more common accessories we provide, we hope it’s of interest.

Foot Treadles for Eye Wash Units

Foot treadles are a simple yet effective add-on device that enables the user to activate the eyewash facility on an emergency safety shower simply by pressing on it with their foot. In an emergency situation, perhaps when sight has been hindered, this can be very helpful in aiding the user to wash their eyes quickly without needing dexterity.

There are two principal types of foot treadles for the Hughes Safety Shower range: K and G series. The type of treadle you need simply comes down to the type of shower you have, which, again, comes in K and G ranges.

Emergency Safety Shower and Eyewash Unit Signs

Signs for an emergency shower and eyewash unit

EN and ANSI recommendations call for an ISO 7010-compliant sign to aid users to readily identify safety showers and eyewash units should an emergency situation arise. The Hughes emergency safety shower and eyewash signs come with brackets and can be mounted in either on the shower pipework or an adjacent wall.

Emergency Safety Shower Lighting

To aid with visibility, special lighting units can be supplied for the Hughes safety shower range. These are particularly useful in dark work environments, as it is absolutely essential that safety showers and eyewash units are readily identifiable and accessible at all times.

Emergency Safety Shower Alarms

Red alarms

In an emergency situation, it’s critical that staff in the area know what’s going on. A range of alarms are available for fitting to our safety shower range, both visual and audible, which go off when the shower is activated. These can be triggered by either a flow switch (based on water flowing through the shower system) or a proximity switch (magenetically actuated). The alarms are available in both flameproof and non-flame proof versions, depending on your worksite requirements. Remote alarms are also available.

Emergency Safety Shower Barriers

Barrier around a safety shower

Protect the safety of your workforce and comply with EN and ANSI standards accessibility requirements for emergency safety showers. These hi-visibility barriers provide a demarcation zone to help prevent the access area at the front of a safety shower from being obstructed. In addition, they offer stability to the casualty who can use the barriers as a handrail in the event of an emergency.

Having your emergency safety showers readily accessible is crucial: the last thing you want is someone stumbling over an obstruction as they try to access the safety shower. Hi-visibility safety barriers are ideal for creating demarcation around the emergency safety shower unit and can be supplied to full EN and ANSI standards. These come in the form of side barriers, corner barriers, U-shaped barriers, and single posts, and are manufactured so as to be corrosion-resistant. They can be wall-mounted or floor-mounted as your requirements dictate.

Heated Jackets For Emergency Safety Showers & Eyewash Units

EN and ANSI standards require that water supplied to eyewash units and emergency safety showers must be tepid, so in colder operating temperatures a heated insulated jacket is a must. Available in both flameproof and non-flameproof versions, the thermostat is used to control the temperature, and the device is free-protected. We can also supply insulated jackets to protect outdoor units from frost and solar radiation.
