Why Emergency Safety Shower Access is Critical in the Food Production Industry

Workers in a food production facility

Food production facilities are an integral part of Irish industry. As with any industry, they present their own risks to their employees and Safety Officers should be mindful of these when developing and reviewing their Safety Management Systems. Emergency Safety Showers are an essential piece of PPE in this regard. You wouldn’t neglect wearable PPE such as protective suits or safety showers, and neither should the importance of access to an emergency safety shower be underestimated in a food production site.

Why are Emergency Safety Showers Important for the Food Industry?

Ironically, some of the products used to make food safe present a risk to those involved in the food production process. For instance, food production factories use a lot of disinfectants, soaps, detergents, refrigerants, and acidic cleaners in order to provide a sterile production environment. These substances can be very harmful should a worker be exposed to them, so it is absolutely vital that workers in such facilities have access to an Emergency Safety Shower should the unthinkable happen.

What type of Emergency Safety Showers is Suitable for a Food Production Facility?

Stainless steel safety showers should be used in food production facilities. This is because they are both easy to clean and corrosion-resistant, necessary factors in maintaining the sterile environment demanded by a food or drink production site while being highly durable. Ceiling and wall-mounted emergency safety shower models are available, depending on what fits best in the individual facility.

How do I maintain the Emergency Safety Shower at the Correct Temperature in a Cold Atmosphere?

ANSI and EN standards require that the water used in emergency safety showers is at a tepid temperature. If your food production facility is a cold environment, you can get insulated and/or heated safety shower units to maintain the water at the correct temperature, even if it’s an otherwise cold environment. Similarly, for work environments where the temperature is too hot, cooling units can be provided for safety showers. You can read more in our blog article on the importance of tepid water for safety showers.
